CyGuide: Five fashion tips for formal recruitment

Formal recruitment should be an exciting way to acclimate yourself to Iowa State, yet many women stress planning the perfect looks. Keep in mind these five fashion tips when putting outfits together for each day of recruitment.

Choose flats or sandals over heels. Recruitment consists of a lot of walking throughout campus and Greekland, so comfortable shoes are a must. Between events you may be on a time crunch, so it will be easier for you to get from place to place promptly if you have flat shoes.

Avoid carrying your finest purse. During each event, you will be leaving your purse and other loose belongings outside—no one in a sorority will see what purse you bring, so bringing the perfect bag is not essential. If it rains, you will also be leaving your bag outside, so try to keep up with the weather and plan accordingly; have a waterproof bag as backup for rainy days.

Wear low-maintenance makeup. There will be very short time periods between events, so you may not always have time to touch-up your makeup. Choose long-lasting balm stains over messy lipsticks to eliminate the worry of having it smear on your teeth. If the weather calls for rain, choose waterproof eye makeup to avoid running.

Avoid clothing items that are too tight, too short, or too revealing. Keep in mind that you are trying to impress other women, so it is important to look tasteful. Impressions are everything in these situations, so you want to avoid having the sorority women misunderstand you because of your clothing. Choosing to dress more conservatively is always a safe option.

Be yourself. Most importantly, do not dress how you think a sorority wants you to dress—dress to showcase your personality. Every sorority at Iowa State is different, so you will find the one that fits you best if you be yourself. Choose appropriate outfits that reveal your personality and illustrate who you really are; it is never a bad thing to make yourself stand out in a good way.
