A runner consumes his 12th doughnut during the 5k Doughnut Run on Saturday, April 14, 2012. The race raised money to help send the ISU Triathlon Team to compete at the Collegiate Nationals race in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Not many races actually promote the eating of doughnuts; the ISU Triathlon Club will put on one of these unique races this weekend.

“It’s the Doughnut Run because it’s one of the only races around that actually rewards you for eating doughnuts,” said Kristopher Spoth, senior in electrical engineering.

The Doughnut Run will start at 9 a.m. April 6 at Brookside Park in Ames.

The Doughnut Run is a 5k race that rewards the racers by how many doughnuts they eat.

“There are four aide stations set up on the course; it’s an out-and-back 5k course, so you hit each aide station twice,” Spoth said. “Now these aide stations have doughnuts at them that the participants can consume during the race and for each doughnut that they eat they get additional time taken off of their finishing time so we give awards for both unadjusted times and doughnut adjust times.”

The four aide stations will also be equipped with water.

Participants can register a team into the race. Team scores will be scored similarly to a cross country meet. They will be scored by adding together the places of the top four team members and the lowest team score wins. Runners are encouraged to come in costume to keep the atmosphere as fun as possible.

Medals will be awarded to the top three men and women for the best run time, and the best doughnut adjusted time. Medals or plaques will also be awarded for the most doughnuts eaten, best costume and top team score.

Door prizes will be drawn for at the end of the awards ceremony after the race.

“Last I checked we had about 225 registered but we usually have it increase exponentially this close to the race, so we’ll probably hit that 350 pretty easily,” said Kyle Weis, senior in chemical engineering.

Students can register the day of the race for $25. The first 500 participants receive a free Doughnut Run pint glass.
