IOWA CITY, Iowa — Playing once again without forward Chelsea Poppens, No. 22 Iowa State traveled to in-state rival Iowa and in a somewhat sloppy contest, suffered its first loss of the season 50-42 on Thursday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Lowdown

It was a slow start to the game with no score for the first minute and a half. The Hawkeyes (7-3) would go on to open up a 14-0 lead to begin the game.

The Cyclones (5-1) would go on a run of their own to close out the first half going into the break trailing 20-17. After taking the lead at the 12:20 mark in the second half 26-24, Iowa State fell behind again and was never able to take control of Iowa.

The X-Factor

Iowa guard Theairra Taylor was a leading scorer for the Hawkeyes with 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

Turning Point

In the second half, guard Brynn Williamson committed a turnover as she was bringing the ball up the court which led to a Taylor basket for the Hawkeyes.

Quotables

Forward Hallie Christofferson on why this loss stings more than most others.

“It’s Iowa. There’s not much more you can say. It’s an in-state game.”

ISU coach Bill Fennelly on how he thought his team did in defending Iowa center Morgan Johnson.

“I thought [center] Anna [Prins] did a great job. That’s a great player. She only got seven points and she touches the ball a ton. That was the reason we were in the game, I think; the way she defended her.”

Iowa coach Lisa Bluder on allowing Iowa State to only have one lead in the game.

“I thought it was really good defense. I wish we could have boxed out a little better. I’m always going to find something we need to work on, obviously. We’re up 11 and let them to get back into it; that was a little disheartening, but I thought we really buckled down those last four minutes.”
