Among the many roads and accidents occurring during the harsh winter storm that is locking down most of the state, Interstate 35 saw one of the worst accidents on Thursday, Dec. 20.

Due to existing weather conditions that caused blinding snow on the highway, a 25-car pileup occurred in Hamilton County’s stretch of I-35.

Lori Foster of public relations for Van Diest Medical Center of Hamilton Hospital said that many of those injured in the accident were transported to their facilities.

Foster confirmed that of the eight patients at the hospital, one has passed, three remain hospitalized, and the rest were released later that evening. Foster also said that not all people injured in the accident were brought to Van Diest.

Locations of others who were hospitalized are not known as of now.

“The VDMC, or the Van Diest Medical Center, worked with quiet efficiency, dignity and respect. Everyone was at the ready and helped assist whenever and wherever possible,” Foster said. “The medical community came together and did what they were trained.”

Witnesses of the accident were unavailable for comment.
