“Snow White” (2025) is the latest in Disney’s live action reboots. I was always kind of baffled by the decision to remake this one. While Snow White is an iconic story, the original animation is from the late 1930’s and about 20 minutes shorter than the new movie. The story of Snow White is iconic mostly due to the third act of the film, so it made this remake rather predictable.
The only reason to seek this movie out is due to Rachel Zegler. She was great in the latest “Hunger Games” film and she really shines here. Even with the badly written script, she has enough movie star charisma and charm to almost make “Snow White” worth watching.
Sadly, everyone else in the cast is nowhere near her acting and you can tell. Especially with Gal Gadot, who is just exceptionally terrible. Every line she read was awful and sucked the air completely out of the film.
What doesn’t help with this either is the CGI used throughout the entirety. The animals are all like this and it does not look good at all, it is distractingly bad, more so than the dwarves’ CGI. Both look pretty bad and it seems like this aspect of the movie was greatly rushed. I felt like the dwarves’ personalities were fine, as they were pretty much unchanged from the original story, as far as I could recall.
The main problem here is that the movie is just incredibly dull. The musical numbers are very bland and boring, with no real dynamism happening on screen to keep you engaged, even if Zegler can really act on screen.
The direction from Webb is very boring and it makes the entire film feel like a slog to get through.
The ending of the story is also the most iconic part, making it so you cannot really change anything because it is what people remember the most about Snow White. The entire film is, overall, very predictable.
