Divers build their way up at Iowa Invitational

A slow start at the Iowa Invitational turned around for a strong meet and a “pretty good weekend” for the ISU diving team.

Elyse Brouillette, Megan Cohea and Marley Dobyns all got a personal best at this three-day invitational in Iowa City.

Brouillete, who contributed 232.85 points for Iowa State, led the scoring for the Cyclones. Dobyns and she both made the ISU all-time top-10 list at this event.

The first day, the divers did not preform as they, or coach Jeff Warrick, had hoped. But the team reached new levels on day two and three of the meet.

“[We] started off a little rough with day one — [I] wasn’t too happy with our performance at that time — but each day built so, in the grand total, I’m really happy with how it went,” Warrick said.

As their first championship-style invitational of the year, Warrick said excitement and nerves were likely the cause of the underwhelming performance in day one.

“On these three-day-type meets we have to be ready the first day,” Warrick said. “We can’t kind of build, we have to have built and be there and be ready to preform that first day. So that’s one thing we are gong to take away and work on.”

Dobyns, who had been out of the pool some in the past few weeks due to a concussion and severe ear infection, was glad to be diving again.

“I had been out of the water for a while and, when I had gotten back in, I had been having some good practices so I was really excited about the possibilities of the meet,” Dobyns said.

Although she too was disappointed in how her day one went, she ended up with a personal best in platform and placed seventh best overall at the event in school history.

“First day of the meet I was still excited but did not do as well as I wanted to,” Dobyns said. “[The team] talked about how, because of the long wait time between each dive, we need to do more to stay in the zone. So, 3-meter day and platform day I made sure to stay moving and stay energized and everything kind of fell into place.”

Brouillette, a freshman, said she was thrilled with the outcome of her first college invitational and with her progress in the past few weeks.

“Making it back to finals on 3-meter was really exciting and having such a great performance, and getting a personal best, and moving up on the all-time top-10 list on both platform and 3-meter was a plus for me,” Brouillette said. “All around a pretty good weekend.”
