Cyclones relinquish late lead, fall to Sooners

No. 11 Iowa State was looking to rebound from its loss to the Hoosiers the previous weekend in the first game of the military weekend series against No. 6 Oklahoma.

The Cyclones started slow with a scoreless first period. The Sooners, however, tallied their first goal of the game at 7:38 in the first, pushing the puck past junior goalie Scott Ismond.

The Cyclones concluded the first period down 1-0.

The Sooners added another goal at 11:35 in the second, slipping the puck past Ismond’s shoulder and putting Oklahoma up 2-0.

Play was stopped at 14:04 in the second due to a scrap in front of the ISU goal, after defenseman Craig Martin slashed Ismond after he had secured the puck. The little altercation landed three players from each team a two-minute minor for roughing.

The Cyclones finally got on the board at 16 minutes in the second period on a power play goal from senior forward David Kurbatsky.

Iowa State, wasting no time, added its second goal of the game with 19 seconds left in the second period on a goal by sophomore forward Trevor Lloyd.

With the late surge in the second, the Cyclones headed into the third period in a 2-2 deadlock.

Iowa State was the first to find the back of the net in the third, adding another goal by Kurbatsky at 8:38 and taking the 3-2 lead. Oklahoma was quick to respond, scoring two goals back-to-back at 10:31 and 11:15 in the third period and taking the 4-3 lead.

The Cyclones were never able to regain the lead and Oklahoma took the first game of the series 4-3.

The teams return to the Ames/ISU Ice Arena on Saturday at 8 p.m.
