Iowa State went on an 11-2 run to begin the first set and never looked back.

The No. 21 ISU volleyball team defeated Texas Tech on Saturday night in Hilton Coliseum in straight sets (25-13, 25-21, 25-16). With the win, the Cyclones improve to 15-7 overall and 8-3 in Big 12 play. The Red Raiders fall to 13-4 and 2-9.

Outside hitter Victoria Hurtt led the way for the ISU offense with 10 kills on a .500 hitting percentage. Right side hitter Mackenzie Bigbee and outside hitter Andie Malloy also contributed with nine kills each.

ISU coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said that she wanted Malloy, who saw action in all three sets, to play a lot against Texas Tech because of how well she has been performing in recent matches and practice.

“I always tell our players, ‘You don’t earn a spot over one or two days, you earn it over time,'” Johnson-Lynch said about Malloy’s playing time during the past week. “She’s been showing over time she’s ready to contribute.”

Setter Alison Landwehr led Iowa State in assists with 13.33 per set. Iowa State held an edge in team assists 44 to 22.

The Cyclones, who have struggled with blocking at times throughout the season, recorded 12 block assists compared to the Red Raiders’ 10.

“We’ve really been focusing on blocking and not just the first ball, but every single [one],” Landwehr said. “In transition it gets a little harder, just make sure we’re relaxed and we know where the hitters on the other team are going.

“It’s a lot of mental and I think we’ve been doing it in practice so it’s translating to games.”

The Cyclones also held the advantage in team digs (47-34) as well as in team kills (46-23) and hitting percentage (.310-.019).

Iowa State is currently on a five-game win streak, its’ longest win streak of the season.
