Local Pharmacy Changes Hands

When walking into Somerset Pharmacy on November 1st, nothing will look different. The store’s layout will be the same. The same friendly faces will be there but it will be changed under the surface.

On Thursday, November 1st, Somerset Pharmacy will be under the new management of NuCara Pharmacy.

Somerset Pharmacy was started in 2006 by its owner Jim Wetzeler. However, tragedy struck the business and his family when Wetzeler suffered from a heart attack on family vacation in Florida.

He passed away shortly after in a hospital on May 29, 2011. Leaving at the tender age of 59, Wetzeler left his business for his family to run. After a year and a half of running the business, the family decided it is time to move on.

Jim Wetzeler’s son, Brian Wetzeler, is the general manager of Somerset said, “It was a family decision to do this.” After putting the business up for sale, the Wetzeler family had several offers and considered many of them before selling their business to their third interested buyer, NuCara Pharmacy.

NuCara Pharmacy is an Iowa based pharmacy that was started over 20 years ago and has grown by having 16 stores in four states. This will make Somerset the company’s 17th store. NuCara is not just a full-service pharmacy.

They are also known for the products that they make such as home medical equipment, home oxygen, IV services, mediation packaging, and much more. The company’s goal is to offer the best products and service possible to keep their customers living as healthy and independent as long as possible.

While many customers may express worries about the change in management, NuCara’s CEO, Brian Wegmann, assures them that it will not be the case.

“We’re going to continue to operate very much like it has been and our hope over time is to add additional services.”

The additional services that Wegmann mention are simply the distribution of NuCara’s well-known medical products. It is their company’s hope to provide the services that Ames residence need to lead healthy and independent lives.
