For the first time in school history, the ISU football team has cracked the top-25 in the Bowl Championship Series rankings.

In the first BCS rankings of the 2012 season released on Sunday, Iowa State (4-2, 1-2 Big 12) found itself as one of seven Big 12 teams, ranked at No. 24.

Despite being unranked in the human element of the BCS — the Harris Poll and the USA Today Coaches’ Poll — the six computers looked at the Cyclones favorably. The computers ranked Iowa State at an average of No. 18, ranking the team as high as No. 13.

The Cyclones were ranked in five of the six computers.

Three of Iowa State’s first six opponents — No. 4 Kansas State, No. 17 Texas Tech and No. 23 Texas Christian — are in the top-25 in the first BCS rankings. The Cyclones are 1-2 in those games, with the two losses coming by a combined 17 points.

The Cyclones have three other top-25 BCS teams remaining on their schedule, including No. 9 Oklahoma, No. 13 West Virginia and No. 25 Texas.
