In the first match as Big 12 opponents, No. 23 Iowa State defeated West Virginia in straight sets (25-14, 25-13, 25-16) Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum.

The meeting was the first between the teams since 2003 — an ISU sweep — and just the fifth all-time, with the Cyclones (10-6, 4-2 Big 12) holding the advantage 4-1.

Outside hitter Victoria Hurtt led the ISU attack with eight kills on a .273 hitting percentage. Hurtt also recorded four digs and one block assist.

The Cyclones held the advantage in team hitting percentage at .263 compared to .010 for the Mountaineers (8-12, 0-6 Big 12). West Virginia entered the match with the worst hitting percentage in the Big 12 this season.

“We’ve been approaching the match lately as; [we’ll] kind of start with an even distribution and see who’s hot,” said ISU coach Christy Johnson-Lynch about kills being spread out among the team. “Some nights it probably will be just even if everyone’s played equally well, but some nights it seems like some people are really hot and some people are struggling.”

Libero Kristen Hahn and outside hitter Rachel Hockaday contributed defensively with each tallying 11 digs, earning 3.67 per set.

“We knew there were going to be a lot of tips and kind of out-of-system plays on their court, so we were way in advance, just to be on our toes, and ready to run those down and making sure we take advantage of those easier balls and run some good plays out of them,” Hockaday said.

Iowa State will take the court again Oct. 17 with a trip to Texas.
