Cyclones finish 9th in first meet

The ISU men’s golf team carded a score of 931 (+79) on Sunday at the end of the 2012 Northern Intercollegiate, landing it in ninth place out of 11 teams.  

Held in Sugar Grove, Ill., the tournament, which opened Saturday, was delayed after the first round due to darkness. Play continued Sunday morning with golfers finishing the second and third rounds.

Indiana won the meet with a team score of 888 (+36).

Scott Fernandez led Iowa State through the weekend, tying for second place with rounds of 74-74-71. With a total of 219 (+6) it makes this Fernandez’s seventh top ten finish of his career.

Zach Steffan, who competed as an individual this weekend, posted the second-highest score by an ISU student, leaving the tournament tied for 34th place.

Other ISU competitors included Duncan Croudis, Borja Virto, Blake Wlaker and Sam Daley. Croudis finished his third round tied for 36th with a total of 237 (+24).

Virto jumped the leaderboard from his opening round placing forty-third to fortieth Sunday with a closing round of 77 (+6) and a total of +25 over par. With the close of the first tournament, the team will be competing next at the VCU shootout Sept. 24-25 in Richmond, Va.
