Despite a hiccup in the third set of Saturday’s match against Baylor, Iowa State was able to put a tally in the win column to kick off Big 12 play.

No. 19 Iowa State (7-4, 1-0 Big 12) defeated Baylor (13-3, 0-1) in four sets (25-15, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17) in Hilton Coliseum.

Right side hitter Mackenzie Bigbee tallied 18 kills and hit a percentage of .424 and outside hitter Victoria Hurtt earned 14 kills with a .444 hitting percentage to lead the ISU offensive attack.

“We got some really nice performances out of Victoria Hurtt,” said ISU coach Christy Johnson-Lynch. “I think that’s probably the best that she’s played this year. She really took over at the end and Mackenzie Bigbee obviously having a great match [as well].”

Libero Kristen Hahn was a defensive presence for Iowa State in the win contributing 25 digs and averaging 6.25 digs per set.

Consistency in match play, Johnson-Lynch said, will be vital to the team’s success as Big 12 play progresses as well as having a strong presence of leadership.

“I think if we can come in and consistently play at a high level, we’re really good because we are so physical,” Johnson-Lynch said. “If we’re playing at a high level, we are going to beat a lot of really good teams.”

Iowa State will travel to Lawrence, Kan. on Wednesday to face the Jayhawks. The match will be Iowa State’s first match away from Hilton Coliseum since Sept. 1.
