The ISU men’s basketball team got a verbal commitment from Matt Thomas on Thursday evening, its first for the 2013 recruiting class.

The Onalaska High School star out of Wisconsin averaged 21.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.1 assists per game last season as a junior and had been heavily recruited by ISU men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg.

With offers from more than 10 schools, Thomas had narrowed his choices to Virginia and Iowa State. On Thursday, Thomas made the decision to play his collegiate career in Ames.

“Officially a Cyclone!!” Thomas said in a tweet.

Thomas later thanked Cyclone fans for welcoming him.

“I want to thank everyone who has congratulated me and for all your support,” Thomas said. “Excited to be a part of #cyclONEnation!”
