Harrison Barnes, the Ames, Iowa, native that helped Ames High School win two state championships, is headed to the NBA.

After two seasons at North Carolina, Barnes was selected 7th overall in the 2012 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors. In two seasons as a Tar Heel, Barnes averaged 16.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

In 2010, Barnes became the first freshman ever to be named as a preseason All-American by the Associated Press. That honor came after he chose North Carolina out of high school as one of the most highly-regarded recruits in the country.

Barnes will be the third Ames native to play in the NBA. The other two are Dick Gibbs, who was selected in the 3rd round in the 1971 NBA Draft and ISU men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg, who was selected 52nd overall in the 1995 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers. Hoiberg spent 10 seasons in the league as a player.
