Iowa State men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg found himself in the national spotlight when the United States Junior Chamber awarded him the Ten Outstanding Young Americans Award.

Jaycees awarded Hoiberg, known as “The Mayor” to Cyclone fans, the prestigious honor for his outstanding role of leadership in the Ames community.

The TOYA award has been given to such notables as Presidents John F. Kennedy and Gerald Ford, actor Christopher Reeve, rock and roll legend Elvis Presley and NFL quarterback Payton Manning.

Hoiberg was raised in Ames and attended Ames as a student-athlete. The 39-year-old alumnus returned to Ames to coach the men’s basketball team in 2010.

In just his second year, The Mayor was able to coach the Cyclones to the NCAA Tournament and knock off the defending national champion Connecticut.

Hoiberg was also awarded Big 12 Co-Coach of the Year for the 2011-12 season. Hoiberg will receive his award in Des Moines on June 30.
