Severe thunderstorm watch canceled for Friday night

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla. has canceled the severe thunderstorm watch for Ames.

The Daily will continue to monitor the system and provide any updates as available.


 

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla. has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Ames until 12 a.m. Saturday. Large portions of central, northeast and southwest Iowa are under similar watches.

One storm system triggered severe thunderstorm warnings and a tornado warning in north central Iowa around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The forecast for Ames calls for a 60 percent chance of storms Friday night. The main threat from storms will be large hail and damaging winds, according to the hazardous weather outlook. Isolated tornados and flash flooding are also possible.

The Iowa State Daily will monitor updates from the National Weather Service and post them as they become available.
