McCoy begins run at NCAA Championships

With a one stroke victory at the NCAA Bowling Green Regional, ISU senior Nate McCoy became the fourth Cyclone to earn an individual berth to the NCAA Championships.

As Ethan Tracy of Arkansas played his final hole, McCoy and ISU men’s golf coach Andrew Tank waited. After Tracy missed the putt, McCoy locked up a trip to California.

“It was a bit nerve-wracking the way it played out,” Tank said. “We were pretty anxious to see how it was all going to play out. Once we realized he had made it, I was so happy for him.”

Now McCoy joins Clay Davis (1980), Dick Stuntz (1974) and John Benda (1969) as the only Cyclones to make the NCAA Championships as individuals.

In all, 30 teams and six individual golfers will compete at the NCAA Championships this week in Pacific Palisades, Calif., from May 29 to May 31.

During the three days of competition, the golfers will play 54 holes of stroke play. The golfer with the lowest score after those three days will be crowned the national champion. The top-15 golfers will earn NCAA awards.
