Farm Operations to hold Barnyard Challenge Saturday

The Farm Operations Club will be hosting a “Barnyard Challenge” from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday for people interested in grabbing a bite to eat at a competitive price.

“Last year around Veishea, we had a stand set up, and we had a bunch of leftover food we were giving away. At one point we started stacking it and it caught on. This year we’ve decided to make an event of it,” said Ryan Schroeder, junior in agricultural studies.

The Barnyard Challenge is a fundraising competition where participants will be given a certain amount of time to eat one hot dog, one bratwurst, one hamburger patty and one turkey tender, all stacked on one bun.

Cost to participate in the Barnyard Challenge will be $8. Schroeder said that the exact amount of time allowed to eat the creation has not been determined yet. However, participants who successfully eat the entire sandwich in the allotted amount of time will be awarded by getting their entry fee back.

The Barnyard Challenge will be held at the Little Red Barn, which is just north of the entrance of Beardshear Hall.

Proceeds from the event will go toward sending students in the Farm Operations Club to contests within the Postsecondary Agricultural Students Organization. Money will also go toward sending students on industry tours to organizations such as Bauer Built or John Deere in Ankeny, Iowa.

“We’re hoping to make this a sort of tradition through Veishea,” Schroeder said.
