Defense, turnovers prevalent in ISU spring game

The ISU football team held and concluded its annual spring football team just before an impending thunderstorm struck Ames.

The Gold team struck in the game, beating the Cardinal team 13-7.

The first half of the game only featured one touchdown — a short pass from redshirt freshman Sam Richardson to receiver Tad Ecby in the second quarter.

There were a few other plays that stood out, however. Quarterback Steele Jantz connected with Josh Lenz for a 56-yard strike down the seam. It was arguably Jantz’s best pass of the game.

Jantz went 12-of-20 in the first half for 112 yards and an interception.

The first quarterback to receive repetitions in the game, however, was redshirt sophomore Jared Barnett, who started for Cardinal.

Barnett struggled in the first half, only completing 55 percent of his passes and throwing two interceptions. He did excel with his feet, however, when he escaped pressure many times by scrambling and running down the field.

There were two interception returns in the first half. Senior A.J. Klein picked off Barnett and took it back 94 yards for a score. Linebacker Jeremiah George then had an interception where he hurdled a player before being taken down.

At the end of the first half the score was 14-6. A running clock in the second half sped the game up and saw a halt in scoring from there on out.
