Men’s golf team aims for NCAA tournament bid

The ISU men’s golf team is coming off of a strong fall season with a first-place finish at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C., among others.

Coming into the year, coach Andrew Tank was unsure of what his goals and expectations would be.

“I wasn’t exactly sure of what to expect because of having a new group of guys. I knew we would be talented, but you never know how long it will take guys to get used to everything,” Tank said. “After the fall season, we sat down as a team and made it our goal to make it to the NCAA tournament.”

With such a strong fall season, reaching that lofty goal now seems possible in the eyes of the players and coaches.

The men’s golf team is very young this season. The team consists of three freshmen, two redshirt freshmen, two sophomores and one senior.

“We have already seen flashes of our young players hitting their stride in the fall,” Tank said. “With the younger guys, you usually tend to see more inconsistency out there, but I am hoping to see less of that as we get more into the spring season.”

Prior to coming to Iowa State, Tank was the assistant for Brad James at the University of Minnesota. While at Minnesota, the team had a lot of success with several Big Ten titles and NCAA appearances.

After arriving at Iowa State, Tank said he believes he will be able to bring that same level of success.

“I feel that I am capable of bringing the success that I was so lucky to be apart of in Minnesota, to Iowa State,” Tank said. “We have the right players in place and, with the right attitude, we have the capability to win championships here at ISU.”
