Spring football practice starts Tuesday

A season removed from numerous upsets and heartbreaks, the ISU football team will begin its annual spring practice season Tuesday.

The team will have 15 practices leading up to its annual spring football game April 14.

Most notably for the offense, Steele Jantz and Jared Barnett are sharing the No. 1 spot at quarterback. Both split time at quarterback last season through different points in the schedule.

Running back Shontrelle Johnson will not be participating in spring practice after sustaining a season-ending neck injury against Texas on Oct. 1. Johnson, a true junior, is listed as the No. 2 running back behind James White.

On defense, returning starters that will not practice include linebacker Jake Knott (shoulder) and defensive end Roosevelt Maggitt (knee), while cornerback Jeremy Reeves (wrist) will be limited.

Knott, a 2011 Sports Illustrated All-American Honorable Mention, suffered a serious shoulder injury on Oct. 8 in the Cyclones’ 49-26 loss to Baylor, a game in which Knott recorded a career-high 18 tackles.

The defense returns five starters from a year ago, while the offense returns seven.
