Allen leads Cyclones in 69-46 rout of Aggies

A career-high 25 points for senior guard Chris Allen, and a dominant afternoon on the glass, paced Iowa State as they completed a season-sweep of Texas A&M, 69-46, in front of a sellout crowd of 14,376 at Hilton Coliseum on Saturday.

The Lowdown

The Cyclones (18-7, 8-4 Big 12) used an 18-3 run to start the second half as the pulled away from the Aggies (12-12, 3-9 Big 12). After a 3-8 first half, Allen went 6-7 from the field, including three 3-pointers in the second stanza.

Allen’s fellow senior in the backcourt Scott Christopherson was the only other Cyclone to finish in double figures, as he scored 10. Sophomore forwards Royce White and Melvin Ejim each pulled down 10 rebounds as Iowa State controlled the boards to the tune of a 38-22 advantage.

After jumping out to a 16-8 lead in the game’s first 10 minutes, Iowa State allowed the Aggies to cut the lead to three before going on a 10-2 run to end the half ahead 30-19. Allen led all scorers at the break with 10 points.

Turning Point

Leading by three with 5:28 left in the first half, the crowd rose to its feet after White threw down a dunk off a dish from Christopherson. Christopherson buried a 3-pointer three possessions later to give the Cyclones their biggest lead of the half at 25-17. Allen would add five points in the final 2:25 to help the Cyclones finish the first half on a 10-2 run and take a 30-19 lead into the locker room.

With the win Iowa State has now led at the half in 10 of 12 Big 12 games and is 17-3 overall when leading at the break.

X Factor

ISU guard Chris Allen continued his impressive offensive stretch, leading the Cyclones with a career-high 25 points on 9-15 shooting. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native finished as the Cyclones’ leading scorer for the second straight game after pouring in 22 at Oklahoma State on Tuesday.

Allen has been hot from beyond the arc over his last four games draining 58.6 percent (17-29) of his 3-pointers in his last four outings.

Up next for Iowa State

The Cyclones will face a quick turnaround as they travel to Waco, Texas, for a matchup with the No. 6 Baylor Bears. Baylor (21-4, 8-4 Big 12) may drop a few spots in the national rankings on Monday, after a pair of double-digit losses this week to No. 7 Kansas 68-54 on Wednesday and No. 4 Missouri 72-57 on Saturday. Tip time for Monday’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
