After months of close losses and coming up short, the ISU wrestling team found itself coming out on top.

The No. 14 Cyclones (3-12, 0-6 Big 12) defeated Northern Iowa 19-17 in their regular-season finale on Friday night in Cedar Falls.

Five Cyclones had their hands raised, but a 7-1 victory by Matt Gibson in the last match of the dual — along with bonus points from Ryak Finch (125) and Andrew Sorenson (165) — put them over the top against the Panthers (5-5, 3-1 WWC).

“It was a good meet for the fans,” said ISU coach Kevin Jackson in a news release. “We trained through this meet this week and I think a couple of our guys were tired at the end as a result.”

Gibson’s dual-winning victory was his 21st win of the season.

Luke Goettl and Mikey England also picked up victories for the Cyclones, winning in a 5-1 decision at 141 pounds and 8-3 decision at 174.

The Cyclones now head into postseason action as they are set to host the NWCA Midwest Regional National Duals on Feb. 12.
