In the early hours of Friday morning, ISU Police Department, Ames Police Department and the Ames Fire Department responded to a collision at the Scholl Road railroad crossing.

Laurel Russell, 55, 1713 Amherst Drive, was life-flighted to Des Moines after authorities reached the scene at approximately 3:07 a.m.

Russell’s injuries were believed to be non-life threatening.

Weather did not appear to play a role in the cause of the accident, and all crossing arms and lights appeared to be working correctly at the time of the collision.

Lt. Elliot Florer said the factors of the accident are still under further investigation.

“The preliminary results from the accident found that the vehicle drove around the railroad crossing arms and the vehicle had been stopped on the tracks,” Florer said.

Russell had no passengers with her at the time and the vehicle was towed away from the scene.

Tracks were reopened this morning at 6:05 a.m. for normal traffic passing through.
