Couple embraces at beach wedding

Getting engaged and planning wedding details is a special time for any couple. However, the whirlwind of excitement may quickly turn to into a hurricane headache of cake decorators, local DJs and honeymoon destinations.

To ease the stresses of wedding planning, first choose an overall theme to run throughout your big day. Making this first preparation step will help ensure that all other elements, such as flowers, venue and decor, are in line with the themed idea. Whether it is understated elegance or an over-the-top production, the theme should be a reflection of the bride and groom’s personality, heritage or culture.

To carry out a cohesive theme, start with the dress. “I always recommend that brides start with her wedding dress, as that will typically set the tone for the event. For instance, a ball gown would not fit in well with a beach ceremony or reception,” said Elizabeth Tomlinson, owner of ETM Events in Des Moines.

From there, the possibilities are endless. Set the tone for the rest of the ceremony and reception through stationery, bridal party attire, food, decor and more.

To get started, consider these popular themes that combine elegance, personality and fun.

Vintage

Whether it is riding in a classic car or wearing your grandmother’s dress, vintage weddings add a sense of nostalgia guests are sure to remember. To tie everything together, use flowers and lace details throughout the ceremony and jazz things up with a swing band at the reception.

Modern

If you are a more contemporary couple, mix fashionable and elegant details to reflect your modern personalities. Black attire is classic, and can be updated with a splash of bold colors such as red, fuschia or teal. Also consider an untraditional dessert, such as a square cake or cupcakes.

Beach

If a destination wedding sounds “beachy” keen but is out of budget, bring the sandy shores to a lakeside wedding. Create an outdoor altar of exotic flowers and coral colors. At the reception, start cocktail hour off with fruity signature drinks and incorporate seashells and starfish throughout the decor and party favors.

Rustic

Choosing to get married on a homestead can create a rustic ambiance, while keeping your budget in check. For a natural and romantic setting, use flowers, candles and chalkboard signs to guide guests throughout the day.

“I love anything that incorporates personal touches that mean something to the bride and groom,” Tomlinson said.

Offbeat

To keep the day romantic and upbeat, add whimsical touches to make the day special for both you and your guests. Instead of flowers, have your bridal party carry balloons to be released during the big kiss. Let the fun carry over to the reception with a vintage photo booth that is fun for all ages.

“As long as the theme is reflective of you and your groom, then you are making the right choice,” Tomlinson said. “The more personal, the more unique and memorable your day will be.”
