Distance team for women’s track comes away successful

After a solid showing at the ISU Open this past weekend, coaches and athletes for the ISU women’s track and field team said they were pleased with the performances everyone showed.

In the events on the first day of the meet, women ran in the distance medley relay, where both the B team and the A team finished in the first and second positions.

“There is no B or A team,” said assistant distance coach Travis Hartke. “We’ve got a lot of good girls. This meet wasn’t about putting together your best relay.”

The first ISU team to finish was the B team with a time of 11:41.69, and in second place was the ISU A team with a time of 11:53.96. The distance medley groups were not the only ones having success in the distance group this weekend, however.

“[The distance runners] are looking really good,” said sophomore Emily Meese. “I think we’ve seen we have some work to do on the track, but for our first meet, we’re pretty happy. We’re in a good spot.”

Of the top 10 spots in the mile run Saturday afternoon, six ISU runners took top 10 finishes, including first, second and third. Betsy Saina won the event with a time of 4:44.18.

“It’s an exciting meet,” Saina said. “You can’t compete with your teammates, but you’re trying to see how everyone feels.”

The open was a good way for runners to get a feel of what they are doing correctly now and what needs to progress before the next meet.

“I felt a lot better than I did a month ago at the preview,” Meese said. “There [are] parts of the race I have to work on, but I’m happy with it and it was a good confidence boost.”

Among other ISU distance event finishers were 600-meter champion Kianna Elahi, 1,000-meter champion Maggie Gannon and the mile-run champion Betsy Saina. Elahi’s time of 1:21.05 was a new ISU Open record.

The ISU men and women will be competing again at home Thursday through Saturday at the Bill Bergan Invitational at Lied Recreation Athletic Center.
