Letter to the editor: Attack on charitable drive distasteful

Micah Makaiwi

I found the letter to the editor by Thomas Walker in the Daily to be rather distasteful. Not only did he belittle a charitable drive by a student organization but he also demeaned the service men and women of our country. I dare Mr. Walker to eat MRE’s and work in the grueling conditions that our men and women in the military have to.

I was fortunate enough to grow up in a city that is home to five military bases and I can personally vouch that a lot of military families are barely scraping by. While they do get a guaranteed salary, a private first class in the Army with six years of experience makes less than the poverty level for a family of four.

The officers in the military who are blessed enough to not have to worry about money got there are after years of hard work, education and risking their lives. I do not take offense at Mr. Walker to advocate for causes he deems worthwhile, but to tear down a worthy charitable cause put on by ISU students, to tear down the military and to say the military is “creating anti-American terrorists” is inexcusable.
