Letter to the editor: Society maintained by those willing to fight

Carsten Bossow

Mr. Walker is not “entitled” to his opinion, that freedom is one that is fought for and protected.

We protect his right to be disrespectful of a lifestyle he has never lived and obviously knows very little about. Troops make enough to buy everything they need? Really? The Department of Defense pay chart is publicly available and at anytime you can see how little we really make. How much does he make lecturing students on his opinions? Pretty sure its at least twice what i make protecting those opinions.

What he doesn’t understand is, it’s not what is contained in the packages themselves but the thought behind it. It doesn’t matter if you receive a pair of socks … or an iPod. It’s the feeling one gets knowing that someone somewhere cared enough to make my day a little brighter when I am thousands of miles away from my family. Mr Walker’s attitude reminded me of this quote:

“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.”

– John Stuart Mill

For all those that support us in our fight everyday, thank you.
