Letter to the editor: Walker is entitled to his opinion

Kenyon Murphy

I read the article about professor Thomas Walker’s opinion on his political views. I went online to the ISD website to read the article and read all of the comments, and I think those comments are just really inconsiderate and biased toward their view also. I didn’t say I agree with Thomas Walker’s view, but there are people saying that our parents should evaluate where they should send their kids to.

I am an ISU student, and I am very proud to be a Cyclone. I don’t think Thomas Walker’s opinion has anything to do with the academic integrity of Iowa State University. As everyone knows, college is all about exploration and having an open mind about things, and this is why people go to college. Thomas Walker is allowed to have his opinion and that has nothing to do with his teaching ability.

He speaks his mind and he has the right to do so, which is stated in our Constitution. This is no different than a law professor having an opinion on how the laws should be, or how he/she views abortion. People are paying big bucks for colleges, and if you can’t think for yourself then I suggest you should quit college. I think people are too worked up about one man’s opinion and they don’t worry about the big picture.

My suggestion is, don’t let party affiliation cloud our judgment. Iowa State is like every other university in the country. We have all kinds of people that work here and teach here. Academic integrity has nothing to do with how one professor views political policy.
