Letter to the editor: Support troops instead of repeating Vietnam experience

Jacob Scott

I got a flyer under my door Thursday morning with a copy of the article “Republican Party needs to extend patriotism to provide aid to needy.” Whoever made the flyer included this email address to send a comment.

I think it is wrong to say we shouldn’t support our troops. Maybe some of our troops do eat better than the poorest people here in the United States, and maybe soldiers can make enough money to buy things for themselves. Does this mean that we shouldn’t be supporting the men and women who have been shipped overseas, to put their lives on the line to defend our country and our way of life? No! I do agree that we need to be giving more money, food and supplies to needy people in our country, but we can’t stop supporting our troops. If we do that, we are repeating history.

In Vietnam, we stopped supporting our troops, and we lost the war, sacrificing thousands of lives for nothing. Giving simple luxuries to our troops can hugely boost morale. Soldiers go through so much for us, and I believe that a simple pat on the back (sending them some friendly gifts) is the least we can do for them while they defend our country. Maybe if other countries would send troops in as well, the war would be going much smoother and wouldn’t be such a financial burden on us. Remember why we first voted to go to war? (Sept. 11.)

Just for your information … I have a sister who is in the Air Force. I have a cousin who will be in the Air Force when he graduates from high school. I also have a woman from my community, a Marine, who is being deployed.

Support our troops.
