Guest column: Schmidt on Rick Santorum

Steffen Schmidt

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has been largely overlooked by the media, has been the “young guy” at the end of the row of debate podiums, and has not gotten much traction so far.

Santorum’s the only one of the seven Republicans running for president who has visited all 99 Iowa counties, so he should have a good base of contacts for caucus night. He touts himself as a pure social conservative; he appears not to have any big negatives, has not had divorces or affairs, but just has not set the GOP base on fire. In the latest poll, he was at 6 percent, near the end of the field of contenders.
