Letter to the editor: Parents should take advantage of Black Friday sales

Elizabeth Opie

Growing up in a world in the middle of a recession leaves many families with few opportunities whilst living in a world that revolves around technology; one either sinks or swims when it comes to gadgets. Kids now face schooling that requires them to use such technology whether or not they can afford it at home. I don’t believe morals is even close to the right word to use, as the “Black Friday Shopping is Symptom of Misplaced Priorities” editorial states, when parents decide to risk their lives in order to provide their heir with a childhood that is “normal” for our generation. I believe what the parents are doing is taking advantage of that one day a year they may actually be able to afford household goods that are more so needed and not wanted.

Yes, a lot of the stuff we are selling in stores is imported, but aren’t we still selling it and making a profit all the same? The economy needs spending regardless of where it is at. Once America gets back on its feet then we can start thinking about becoming an independent nation who provides for themselves. At this point, we have no chance in achieving that dream because more than half of the country can’t afford it.
