The ISU women’s basketball team took on in-state rival Northern Iowa and gave Cyclone fans something to cheer about at Hilton Coliseum on Tuesday night with an 84-57 victory.

Leading scorer Chelsea Poppens made her return to the lineup after sitting out of the matchup with Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 11 with a knee injury. Poppens, who averages 14.4 points per game, led all scorers with 20 points and also contributed a career-high four assists in the win.

Iowa State saw success against the Panthers on offense, as three other Cyclones scored in double figures (Nikki Moody with 15, Anna Prins had 12 and Fallon Ellis scored 10).

The Cyclones also shot 8-of-18 from beyond the arc, extending their NCAA record 3-point streak to 526 games.

Decorah, Iowa, native Rachel Madrigal led Northern Iowa with 12 points, but the Panthers’ 39 percent shooting from the field kept them out of the game and Iowa State rolled to its third consecutive win. Their 84 points was also a season-high for the Cyclones.

After a break for the holidays, the Cyclones will return to Hilton Coliseum on Thursday, Dec. 29, to face New Hampshire in the Cyclone Challenge. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
