Guest column: Schmidt on Rick Perry

Steffen Schmidt

Texas Gov. Rick Perry was a latecomer to the presidential contest. He reminds voters of the last Texan to serve in the White House, George W. Bush, which is a distinct liability since Bush left with very low approval ratings and a very critical Republican Party.

Perry did very poorly in most presidential debates and had many “oops!” moments, such as when he forgot the third federal government agency he wanted to eliminate.

He also favors giving children of illegal immigrants in-state college tuition in Texas and has been identified with oil and opposed to ethanol tax breaks, which is a poor position in Iowa. He was at the tail end, single digit of the eight contestants with only 6 percent in the latest poll tied for next to last with Rick Santorum.
