Oklahoma State women’s basketball coach Kurt Budke and assistant Miranda Serna have died in a plane crash along with two others. There were no survivors in the crash.

This tragedy comes just 10 months after the 10th anniversary of a crash that killed 10 men associated with the OSU men’s program.

The plane crashed Thursday night in Perry County, Ark., killing the pilot and another individual not affiliated with the university, according to a news release from the school.

Budke had opened his seventh season as the Cowgirls’ coach on Sunday with a 96-60 win against Rice in Stillwater, Okla.

Serna had worked as an assistant coach under Budke at Louisiana Tech before they both came to Oklahoma State.

ISU coach Bill Fennelly issued a statement to the media on his reaction to the tragedy.

“I am truly numb after hearing of the loss of Coach Budke and Coach Serna,” Fennelly said. “Under Kurt’s leadership, the Cowgirl program had returned to national prominence. Kurt and Miranda impacted so many lives in such a positive way. These tragedies are things we search to understand but we probably never will. Now we all must reach out to help Kurt’s family and the entire OSU community.”

The school has canceled the team’s games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday against Grambling State and Texas-Arlington. The football team, which is ranked No. 2 in the nation, is in Ames to play Iowa State on Friday night.
