The Cyclones dropped their first loss of the season to Penn State 66-59 at the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev. A slow first half was too much to overcome for Iowa State, being down 37-28.

Penn State was led offensively by Maggie Lucas with 18 points and six rebounds. The Nittany Lions received double-digit efforts from a total of three players.

Iowa State was led by freshman Brynn Williamson, who was hot from behind the arc, going 4-9 from 3-point range and led the Cyclones offensively with 15 points. Iowa State couldn’t overcome cold shooting from Chelsea Poppens, who was 3-for-8 from the field and 5-for-13 from the free-throw line. Also struggling was freshman Nikki Moody, who was 1-for-11 from the field and 1-for-7 from beyond the arc.

The Cyclones continue the Nugget Classic on Saturday as they face Butler at 7 p.m.
