Sigma Lambda Beta helps carry out the mission of Iowa State

Often times when people hear the word “multicultural” they think it is for those that dominantly have descendants from countries other than America. At Iowa State, that’s just not the case.

Multicultural is a term used on the ISU campus that encompasses different traditions and beliefs and invites all students to join and learn about something new or share the familiar experiences with those you care about.

The fraternity of Sigma Lambda Beta is just one organization on campus that aims to fulfill this ISU philosophy.

Though they are non-residential, meaning they don’t have a house amidst all the others in greekland, they try to make every brother feel at home.

Historically Sigma Lambda Beta is a Latino-based fraternity and is now truly a multicultural entity at Iowa State. Representing multiple nationalities, Sigma Lambda Beta has created a “dynamic, value-based environment,” to carry out their mission as a fraternity.

Their mission is described through an acronym: D.R.E.A.M.S., which stands for developed, responsible, educated, aware, multicultural Scholars.

Potential members do not rush the same as other fraternities do. At Sigma Lambda Beta, the rushing process is longer to allow potential members to get to know each and every current member of the brotherhood as well as allowing participants to get to know what Sigma Lambda Beta is all about.

Ben Peterson, freshman in English, is involved with Sigma Lambda Beta as well as other aspects of greek life by being a part of Multicultural Greek Council.

“As a fresh member of Sigma Lambda Beta I have been given the amazing opportunity to work within an organization that is extensively rich in culture. Due to this richness, we place a deep value on promoting cultural awareness, which at times can be lacking within the Iowa State community.”

“In addition, Sigma Lambda Beta has taught me that I can work and function at higher levels than I ever thought possible. As an officer within my fraternity and as the acting executive VP of the Multicultural Greek Council, I am doing things that if you told me I’d be doing them a year ago, I would say you’re crazy.”

“Because of all these things the organization has given me, I have been able to give so much back to my organization, my school, and my community, and for this I’m am very thankful.”

While there are many multicultural resources, organizations, and events at Iowa State, Sigma Lambda Beta continues to enrich the diversity on campus.
