Forty-two harriers braved the dark skies and cold April 14 to run in the VEISHEA 5K event, “Off to the Races.”

Winning the 3.1-mile race on Central Campus was ISU sophomore and former Cyclone track athlete Jarred Schubert. The Rockford native, majoring in mechanical engineering, won the event in a time of 19:00.

“My favorite part of the race is definitely the finish,” Schubert said. “You just have your adrenaline going and you don’t really feel anything anymore.”

The first female runner to cross the finish line was ISU graduate student Shaylyn Wiarda. The Dows native was clocked at 23:36.

Wiarda, in addition to Schubert, was a member of the ISU track team but exhausted her eligibility after competing for four years.

Schubert and Wiarda said that they try to run recreationally several times a week and that it was a fun experience to win their gender groups in the VEISHEA 5K race.
