Repeat champs crowned in 4-on-4 co-ed basketball tourney

Another year of the 4-on-4 co-ed VEISHEA basketball tournament ended with last year’s champions crowned again.

Logan Albaugh, Reed Hundt, Jeff White, Carly Martin and Cassie Cruise swept the tournament last year and successfully defended their title with the help of one newcomer, Apa Wal.

“It was really competitive and it was a lot of fun to play in. They had a pretty good showing, about the same amount of teams as last year.” Albaugh said. “It was a little more competitive than last year.”

The tournament was made up of 13 teams total, each promised at least two games.

Tournament rules dictate that each team have at least two males and two females on the court at all times.

When a male scores inside of the 3-point arc, it counts as one point, and outside the line counts as two. Standard scoring was applied when a female scored a basket.

Males were not allowed to block the shots of a female, but were allowed to steal the basketball.

“Really, the only thing different is that if you were on a fast break, you want to dish it to a girl,” White said.

Team Albaugh, as they called themselves, made it to the championship game to face Team Capesius, who was also undefeated.

Team Albaugh jumped out to an early lead and looked like they would run away with the game in the first half until Sarah Milner of Team Capesius stroked a pair of threes to bring the game to a 21-16 lead for Team Albaugh at the half.

The defending champs played lockdown defense the rest of the game, holding Team Capesius to just five second-half points.

Albaugh led the way in scoring with 12 points, followed by White with seven points and Martin with six points and three blocks.

Milner was the leading scorer for Team Capesius with eight points in the championship game.

“We really just tried to get open looks for them and depend on our teammates, and they definitely came through,” Albaugh said about his team’s shooters.
