Gridiron: Picks

Editor’s note: This is week eight of the Iowa State Daily’s season-long Gridiron challenge. Each week, the Daily’s three football reporters and the sports desk columnist will choose the winner from seven college football games around the country and provide commentary on each game.

Records through 10 weeks:

  • Jake Lovett: 43-27
  • Chris Cuellar: 40-30
  • Jeremiah Davis: 38-32
  • David Merrill: 35-35

Iowa State at Colorado

  • Jake — Iowa State — Good news, Dan Hawkins is gone. Bad news, Cody Hawkins isn’t.
  • Chris — Iowa State — “I’m Paul Rhoads, and I’ve got balls.” – Paul Rhoads
    “I’m Colorado’s head football coach.” – Anonymous
  • Jeremiah — Iowa State — I wonder if Dan Hawkins will actually go back to intramurals, brother.
  • David — Iowa State — If Kansas can beat these guys, I’m pretty confident Iowa State can after nearly knocking off Nebraska

No. 13 Iowa at Northwestern

  • Jake — Northwestern — Remember what happened when these two teams played in 2009? Good news, 2009 Ricky Stanzi is back.
  • Chris — Northwestern — Dan Persa. Love it or leave it.
  • Jeremiah — Iowa — It’s about time for Iowa to lay another egg, right? High expectations, average opponent. I just don’t have the Paul Rhoads cajones to not pick ’em.
  • David — Iowa — Northwestern just doesn’t have the firepower and I don’t have a great record when picking against the Hawks.

Georgia at No. 2 Auburn

  • Jake — Auburn — If Mark Richt wins this game, Georgia might have to start paying him Cam Newton money.
  • Chris — Auburn — Bo Jackson is writing Cam Newton on his Heisman ballot. You can too, for just $200,000.
  • Jeremiah — Auburn — I will say this loud and clear, if Gene Chizik didn’t have Cameron Newton, he’d be on his way out already.
  • David — Auburn — Mark Richt is apparently still the coach at Georgia, I don’t think that will last much longer. Oh yeah, Cameron Newton is also kind of a beast.

Kansas State at No. 20 Missouri

  • Jake — Missouri — Bill Snyder’s last memory of Missouri was showing Lewis and Clark the way through.
  • Chris — Missouri — To call the Wildcats “kinda one-dimensional” is like calling Bill Snyder “kinda ancient.” It’s truly a disservice.
  • Jeremiah — Missouri — How long ’til Bill Snyder says, “The hell with this football stuff, I’m gonna go to Liberty Medical commercials.”
  • David — Missouri — In one of the strangest years in the Big 12, at least in my memory, look for Missouri to rebound at home after getting upset but Texas Tech.

USC at No. 18 Arizona

  • Jake — Arizona — The ‘Cats just have too much speed in the backcourt. What? This isn’t basketball? But that says “No. 18 Arizona!” I’m confused by this.
  • Chris — USC — Lane Kiffin: Proving it’s better to ride your dad’s coat tails than your brother’s.
  • Jeremiah — USC — Lane Kiffin only exists to make people’s lives worse.
  • David — USC — I have to pick one upset because I feel like I haven’t been picking any lately. USC did put up somewhat of a fight against Oregon.

No. 17 Mississippi State at No. 11 Alabama

  • Jake — Alabama — Mississippi State hasn’t been this good since … well, ever I guess. Yeah, ever.
  • Chris — Alabama — Disappointed Nick Saban made it out of the Bayou without getting mauled by the tiger. More cowbell!
  • Jeremiah — Alabama — No way ‘Bama loses two in a row, right?
  • David — Alabama — Alabama is having what they would call a down year and if this game wasn’t a home game for them, they’d probably lose.

No. 23 Texas A&M at Baylor

  • Jake — Texas A&M — Bill Snyder napped through Baylor’s entire run in the top 25.
  • Chris — Baylor — RG3 and Flash Gordon hookup for the biggest shootout in Waco since…whoops. Sorry.
  • Jeremiah — Texas A&M — It was nice while it lasted for Baylor. But A&M is on a roll, and Baylor is who we thought they were.
  • David — Texas A&M — Baylor finally got brought back down to earth against Oklahoma State. In the case they still have an heir about them, this game should fix that.
