With some chocolate ice cream topped with white chocolate chips, graham cracker pie crust and whipped cream, Kappa Delta Bri Buscher finished fifth in the second-annual Cold Stone Creamery Go Greek Scholarship Contest.

Stephan Siegel, manager of the Cold Stone Creamery in Ames, invited all ISU sororities and fraternities to nominate a contestant.

The nominees each developed a unique ice cream creation and competed with other houses for a scholarship of up to $500. The inventor of the most-purchased creation will win the scholarship.

“We had about eight or nine houses participate this year,” Siegel said. “Last year we had about 17 houses participating, so the scholarship was a bit bigger.”

This year, the first-place winner will receive a $250 scholarship and a free ice cream social for his or her chapter. Each participant will receive a Cold Stone gift bag.

Buscher, junior in kinesiology and health, said she asked her sorority sisters for suggestions when developing her creation.

“It was a good way to get the house together and going for one thing. It was a lot of fun,” Buscher said.

Buscher’s concoction, entitled “S’more KD,” survived the first round of the competition, Sept. 6 to Sept. 26. She advanced to the second round, Sept. 27 to Oct. 17, which consisted of the top five creations.

“I got a lot of support [from my house],” Buscher said. “We had different Cold Stone nights where people would try to go.”

All the creations were displayed on a menu board during the contest. Contestants earned points when customers purchased their concoction, depending on the size of the order. A 3-ounce order earned one point, while a 48-ounce order earned seven.

Buscher finished with 144 points.

“I feel like the five finalists this year were more popular with the general public than some of the creations we’ve had in the past,” Siegel said. “Sometimes we’ll do this kind of thing for fundraisers … and they don’t always go over so well.”

Siegel said he’s even asking Cold Stone area developers if he can start carrying some of the more popular creations on a regular basis.

“Everyone just loved the fun energy,” Siegel said. “It’s nice to find something that does something good for the community, but you can also have fun with in the process.”

The rest of the results have not yet been released. Keep reading the Iowa State Daily this week to find out who won the Cold Stone Go Greek contest.
