Daily Staff

Matt Schultz (R)

Schultz is a councilman serving Council Bluffs since 2005 and an attorney at Schultz and Watson, LLP.

Schultz listed unemployment as his main issue on his website. If elected, Schultz would like to fulfill three goals:

1. Be an advocate for Iowa jobs and business

2. Streamline corporate filings

3. E-verify — the Federal Employment Verification System

He graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in political science and then went to law school at Creighton University.

Michael Mauro (D)

Mauro has been auditor for Polk County for nine years before he was elected Secretary of State in 2006.

He has focused on “streamlining services and making the office more user-friendly for the residents of Polk County,” according to his website.

According to his website, he worked with the Iowa Legislature to:

  • Allow same-day voter registration
  • Establish a uniform voting system for all Iowa counties
  • Ensure a voter-verified paper trail for all future elections
The Secretary of State’s website received honors as the top elections website in the country after the 2008 General Election.
