Huskers defeat Cyclones in four sets

No. 4 Nebraska defeated No. 11 Iowa State in four sets (25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 28-26) at Ames High School on Wednesday night.

The Cornhuskers got off to a fast start after a couple mistakes made by the Cyclones to take the first set, 25-22.

The Cyclones retaliated in the raucous atmosphere of Ames High for the second set, winning 26-24 to knot the match at 1-1.

By the intermission, seniors Victoria Henson and Ashley Mass both had 11 kills and 10 digs, respectively.

The Cyclones led by as many as six points in the third set before losing their lead and ultimately losing that set, 25-23.

After a heart-felt performance in the fourth set, the Cyclones fell short, 28-26, to end the see-saw match.

Senior Victoria Henson and junior Carly Jenson each registered double-doubles for the cardinal and gold. Henson led the team with 19 kills and contributed 11 digs, while Jenson added 17 kills and 17 digs for the Cyclones.

Nebraska’s 6-foot-5 right-side hitter Lindsey Licht led the Cornhuskers with 15 kills. Senior outside hitter Tara Mueller provided a double-double for the Huskers with 10 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Werth also contributed 13 kills and eight digs for the Huskers.

ISU true freshman Tenisha Matlock was sent in for junior Kelsey Petersen, who had been struggling throughout the night, to record one kill and one solo block. Petersen was pulled after notching only two kills in nine attempts with four errors, lowering her hitting percentage to -.222.
