The University Community Childcare center at Schlitter & University Village is closed due to the severity of the floods that occurred early Wednesday morning and is looking for an alternative location.

In the floods that occurred earlier in the week, the SUV daycare center experienced 6-8 inches within their building and was shut down.

Penny Pepper the director of the University Community Childcare center said the biggest concern right now was trying to find an alternative location before fall classes start on August 23. As of Friday afternoon they have yet to find a location for a temporary daycare.

The daycare center has shut down since the flooding occurred, leaving parents to find alternative means of finding someone to watch their children. More than 100 children attend the daycare.

Also damaged in the floods were the childcare resource center and the comfort zone, which is a place to keep ill children who can’t go to daycare for fear of infecting other playmates and their parents are unable to watch them.

Pepper said the cleaning process would take at least two months before the center reopens.

The center will have to replace all of its flooring and some of the walls. Anything that could not be cleaned and sanitized was forced to be thrown out including a significant amount of wood shelving and furniture.
