In day two of Iowa State’s first trip to the Runza/AVCA Showcase, the Cyclones took one back from the SEC with a four-set victory over No. 14 Kentucky (25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22).

Jumping out to a 25-17 win in the first set, the Cyclones were led by senior outside hitter Victoria Henson with five kills and sophomore setter Alison Landwehr with a career-high eleven assists.

Despite hitting .364 in the second set, the Cyclones dropped the second set 25-22. Both Iowa State and Kentucky came out of the intermission a bit shaky and hit only .138 and .147 respectively. The Cyclones were able to capitalize on late blocks from junior Debbie Stadick and outside hitter Victoria Henson ended the match with two kills in the last five points to give the Cyclones a 25-22 victory in the third.

Looking to end the match in the fourth set, ISU sophomore Jamie Straube gave the Cyclones the serve with a solo block at 23-21. After a Kentucky point, Henson finished the match with her match-high seventeenth kill giving the Cyclones a 25-22 victory in the fourth set.

The Cyclones (1-1) had four players with double digit kills, led by Henson who hit .283 and junior Carly Jenson with fourteen kills in her substitute role for the injured Rachel Hockaday. In her second start as a Cyclone, sophomore setter Alison Landwehr was two digs short of a triple-double, finishing with 10 kills, 43 assists and eight digs. Leading the Wildcats was redshirt freshman Whitney Billings, with fifteen kills and eight digs.

Iowa State will have four days off before they host UW-Milwaukee at 1 p.m. at Ames High School on Friday. Check out iowastatedaily.net for a full recap later today and full coverage of the Runza/AVCA Showcase in Monday’s print edition.
