Ames is on the list.

Brian Phillips, city manager intern who filled out the government response for Ames and graduate student in political science, said a few weeks ago, he found the list Google compiled of the government responses it received to be part of the Google Fiber trial. Applications to be considered for the trial were due March 26. According to Google, the network trial would provide connection speeds as high as one gigabyte per second.

Cities were able to be nominated through city or regional governments or by indivdual community members. The list includes those governments that responded. There are 1,077 government responses listed on the website, including 22 from the state of Iowa.

Phillips said Google has indicated it will narrow down the list and make site visits to those cities.

“There will be a second round, in a sense,” he said.

According to the website, Google plans to make its decision by the end of the year. The goal is to provide the network to 50,000 to 500,000 residents.
