HOCKEY: Cyclones score big on Panthers in win

Blake Schultz —

Coming into Friday, the Cyclones had one thing on their minds — get a win for the seniors on senior night and they were able to get it done in a dominating fashion over Northern Iowa with a score of 9-2.

The Cyclones got the scoring started right away with a goal a minute and a half into the game by junior Mitch Paulsen. Iowa State went on to score three more times in the period to bring the score to 4-0 at the end of the first.

During the intermission, the seven Iowa State seniors were honored for their work all the years they played for the program.

Iowa State picked up right where they left off to start the second period, but slowed the game down. The Cyclones scored twice in the period on goals from sophomores Josh Mandich and Cody Steele.

The panthers finally put up a score in the third period getting the puck by freshman goalie Paul Karus. The goal would end up being not a factor as the Cyclones cruised to a 9-2 victory.

“It was pretty fun just being out there tonight with the seniors because they were just out there messing around and having a good time,” said freshman Derek Kohles.

Last weekend, the Cyclones had trouble staying out of the penalty box and controlling the puck, but that was not the case on Friday. The Cyclones were penalized only a couple of times and were able to control the puck with ease due to the quickness against Northern Iowa.

Cody Steele led the Cyclones with two goals, while Kohles led the Cyclones in assists with three.

“It was just a good night,” said coach Al Murdoch. “Theres only one thing better than winning on Friday night and that’s winning both Friday and Saturday.”

Iowa State will play Northern again on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
