The Iowa State men’s and women’s track teams kicked off their track season in 2010 with the first day of the ISU Open on Friday with strong performances. On the women’s side, recent transfer Emily Nugent competed unattached for the Cyclones and won the weight throw with teammate Danielle Frere finishing second.

The runners got off to a strong start on Friday with the women’s distance medley team of Erin Penticoff, Kaylee Small, Molly Lohry, and Lisa Koll finishing with a time of 11:47.60, to break the ISU Open record for the event that was set by Drake University last year.

The “D” distance medley team also finished second in the event. Caitlin Weber received third place in pole vault after clearing 3.35 meters.

The Iowa State men also had a strong showing in the distance medley, taking the first four spots. The medley came down to the very end with the “A” distance medley team of Hillary Bor, Tim Jardine, Michael Alexander, and Guor Marial beat out the “B” team by a hundredth of a second.

The Cyclones received a second place finish from sophomore Jamaal Currica (23-05.25) who competed unattached and fellow sophomore Tony Johnson started the 2010 year off with a seventh place finish in the long jump (22-08). Junior Nick Pearson rounded off the men’s long jump performance with a tenth place finish (22-02.50) .
