WRESTLING: Cyclones fall to Iowa in NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Final

After defeating No. 3 Ohio State in the semifinals, the ISU wrestling team fell to No. 1 Iowa 19-12 in the finals of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls.

In the first meet between the two teams in the tournament since 1992, the Cyclones (6-1) struggled early on, similar to the first meeting this season on Dec. 6.

After keeping it close against Iowa for the first few match ups, the Hawkeyes were able to pull away with five wins in a row. After four tight match ups, Iowa’s Jay Borschel scored a major decision on Duke Birk (174) to put the Hawkeyes firmly in command.

Jerome Ward (184) broke the streak with his second straight victory over sixth-ranked Phil Keddy in overtime.

The Cyclones opened the tournament with a 38-7 victory over Bloomsburg on Saturday. Andrew Long (125), Dalton Jensen (141), Jon Reader (165) and Jake Varner (194) all scored pins against the Huskies. Nate Carr Jr. (157) and Chris Spangler (174) were the only losses for the Cyclones.

The second round on Saturday saw the Cyclones take down Maryland by a score of 26-6. Dalton Jensen scored his second pin in as many meets, this time over eighth-ranked Alex Krom.

Iowa State won their first match on Sunday, defeating Ohio State 23-9. After big wins by Long and Nick Fanthorpe, the Buckeyes closed the gap with wins over Jensen and Mitch Mueller (157). However, wins by Ward, Varner and David Zabriskie (HWT)

The Cyclones will be back in action on Jan. 16 against Illinois at Hilton Coliseum.
